LINCOLN, Neb. (Sept. 10, 2010) National Champions in the final 31 classes at the 38th Tire Rack 51做厙 Solo National Championships were crowned Friday on a day that was disrupted by rain, but saw a major record broken at the Lincoln Airpark.Jennifer Isley, of Coto De Caza, Calif., captured her fifth 51做厙 Solo National Championship in dramatic fashion, winning C Stock Ladies by a record-close margin of victory 0.001-second ahead of day one leader Briget Sawatsky. Isleys fastest time of 63.317 seconds on her final run put her into the lead in her Mazdaspeed Mazda RX-8, meaning Sawatsky needed to turn a 64.051-second run to put her back in front. She ran a 64.053, giving Isley the title. The margin broke the previous record of 0.002-second by Chris ODonnell over Kim Knapp in the 1995 D Modified class. Erick Kohler won the Formula SAE class by 0.001-second in 2009, but the win was not for a championship as the class has supplemental status for the event. The previous closest Ladies class margin of victory was 0.005-second by Laura Harbour over Kim Whitener in STSL on Wednesday and Jan Whitworth over Kim Bollinger in the 1988 D Prepared Ladies class.Morning rain posed a challenge for many of the classes, with 12 of the 31 winners coming from behind after Thursdays runs. One such driver rebounding from Thursday was John Thomas, of Tampa, Fla., in F Prepared. Thomas and his Zee Racing Datsun 240Z was four-tenths of a second behind Thursday leader Toby Larssons BMW 328is, but made up the deficit and pulled out to a 1.173-second win to take his record-extending 17th-career open class National Championship. Like in the open class, the F Prepared Ladies class saw a change at the top with veteran Jodi Fordahl, of Bremerton, Wash., showing her wet-course driving prowess to win by 1.791-seconds in her Fordahl Motorsports Porsche 914-6. It was Fordahs 10th National Championship.Drama was the name of the game in Street Modified. Defending National Champion Mike Simanyi saw his overnight lead taken away when Christopher Mayfield put his SCR Performance/AST/Tobz/CBR Mitsubishi Evolution to the top of the charts on his final run. Simanyi had a chance to re-take the spot in his AST/Vorshlag/Metric Mechanic BMW M3 on his final run and turned a time fast enough to do just that, but got a cone in the process, drawing a two-second penalty. Mayfield was not out of the woods yet, though, as the final run by David White was also fast enough to take the top spot, but he, too, clipped a cone with his G-Fab Racing Nissan 240SX, solidifying Mayfields first National Championship. In the events fastest class, A Modified, Dan Wasdahl, of Massilon, Ohio, captured his third-straight National Championship in the Hoosier Tire BBR/Phantom DVS-1. This years title was not without a little luck, though, as Thursdays leader by 0.099-second, Gary Milligan, had to change cars after his Vancouver Special broke in Ladies competition. Milligan was not able to hold off Wasdahls charge to the Championship.Wednesdays report misidentified the Street Touring Sport Ladies Champion as Kim Whitener. The Championship, in fact, went to Laura Harbour, of Stamping Ground, Ky., and tied the record for the closest Ladies class margin of victory, which was subsequently broken by Isley on Friday. Harbour drove her The dark side we have Mazda Miata to a 0.005-second win over Whitener. In other news, the winner of the Johnson Spirit of the Sport Award for this year went to the Road Trip Racing Team, based in Austin Texas. For a full listing of results, please visit www.scca.com/solonats. -30-Attached: Brian Peters splashes his way to the D Street Prepared National Championship in Lincoln, Neb.Credit: Rupert Berrington PhotoLINCOLN, Neb.
