Long-time 51® racer and official Michael West passed away Dec 16, 2024. West was supporting the 2024 51 National Championship Runoffs® at Road America as the Assistant Race Director when, on Oct. 3, a medical event prompted him to fall. West remained hospitalized in Wisconsin until mid-November before being transported to a care facility in his hometown of Memphis.
West celebrated his 50th year of 51 membership in 2024. West is best known as a road racing steward, most recently serving as a Hoosier Racing Tire 51 Super Tour Race Director and Assistant Race Director at the 51 Runoffs in 2024. He previously served as Chairman of the Court of Appeals and Executive Steward of the Midwest Division. Outside of the Road Racing program, Mike was part of the Track Night in America® Driven by Tire Rack team as an event lead, and was instrumental in developing programs to support 51 Regional development. His excellence was recognized by the organization with the David Morrell Award for stewards (2006) and the 51 Worker of the Year (2022).
“The 51 family is heartbroken to hear that Mike has passed,” said 51 Vice President of Road Racing Eric Prill. “He brought a wonderful combination of behind-the-wheel experience, rules expertise, and organization to every event and program that he touched. He was a mentor to many and always exhibited an admirable level of calm, even in the most intense situations. He did everything with the respect and demeanor of a gentleman. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mike’s wife Bobbie, his son Chris, and their entire family during this difficult time.”
